Celebrating the legacy of our people
By Bill Anoatubby, Governor, Chickasaw Nation
November is a special month for First Americans across the United States as we observe Native American Heritage Month. At the Chickasaw Nation, we take this special time to celebrate our unique culture and recognize the legacy of our ancestors, as well as the impact of Chickasaws in recent history and today.
From our cultural bearers and keepers of our language and traditions to educators, business leaders, health professionals, governmental leaders and more, Chickasaw people are thriving and making a difference in communities across the country and in a multitude of areas.
It is this legacy – a legacy of people who endured through Removal and Indian Territory to a flourishing community committed to upholding the bonds that have sustained us – that we are dedicated to carrying on and maintaining.
We are proud of our rich heritage and devoted to preserving and sharing our history, language and culture. We offer many programs and services to do just that.
Knowledge of Chickasaw history is important so that we understand who we are and from where we came. It teaches us the importance of the community and family values that Chickasaws have held for generations, as well as the story of the perseverance and fortitude of those who came before us.
As always, we are tremendously thankful for the culture, traditions and stories that have been passed on. We use these today as lessons and teaching tools for the next generation of Chickasaw leaders.
We also take pride in sharing our story and culture with the world so that others may gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the impact of the Chickasaw Nation and Chickasaw people throughout Oklahoma and U.S. history.
We encourage all to celebrate Native American Heritage Month and the vibrant culture and rich heritage of our people, past and present. Consider the struggles and hardships our ancestors withstood as they sacrificed, prevailed and paved the way for the future of the Chickasaw Nation, and those who continue to carry on this rich legacy.
This Veterans Day, we also honor the many brave Chickasaws who have served, and continue to serve, in all branches of the U.S. military and give thanks to all veterans for their service and sacrifice.
The Chickasaw Nation is proud to honor our veterans and active-duty military members through a range of programs and opportunities. We encourage Chickasaw service members to learn more about our Warrior Society, Veterans Lodge and the many resources our Veterans Services offers.
This is a month of reflection, celebration and gratitude as we look forward to the continued progress of the Chickasaw Nation and Chickasaw people. Happy Thanksgiving!
