Independence Day offers a look into intertwined U.S., Chickasaw history
By Bill Anoatubby, Governor, Chickasaw Nation
This month, we have the privilege of reveling in our country’s independence and, as Americans, the freedoms and liberties we appreciate each day. Independence Day is a time of joyous celebration and fellowship with family, friends and loved ones.
Chickasaw history is forever entwined with the history of the United States. We were here before this country’s formation and we remained a sovereign nation after. Our sovereignty was recognized in the U.S. Constitution and it is what propels our tribal government to this day.
We have withstood many tribulations, celebrated many triumphs, and we are still here as a thriving and culturally significant people. Guarding our sovereignty and helping people gain a deeper understanding of the history, treaties, legislation and legal decisions affirming that sovereignty, is a job we take very seriously. Furthermore, it is important to understand how tribal sovereignty and self-determination allow us to offer programs, services and opportunities for Chickasaws of all ages.
Through revenues generated from our diversified business portfolio and sound economic investments, we are dedicated to positively impacting Chickasaw lives. This dedication is evident this summer as hundreds of Chickasaw youth have taken part or are currently taking part in summer camps and engaging in sports, culture, arts, sciences and more. Our various camps, clinics and academies allow our youth to discover and learn, build significant cultural bonds and promote skills for achievement long into the future.
Additionally, more than 700 youth are investing in their future career development by participating in the Toksali SMART program, which matches youth with local businesses and encourages them to develop productive work patterns and behaviors in real-world environments.
Our hope and goal is that each of these programs serve as opportunities to assist Chickasaw youth in their path to becoming strong and productive citizens who contribute positively to society.
By investing in our youth and families, we are investing in the future of the Chickasaw Nation. The children who use and benefit from our various programs and services will grow to be the next generation of professionals and public servants, doctors and teachers, lawyers and caregivers.
With an emphasis on our long-held values of support and encouragement, we are working to ensure Chickasaws have the tools and resources to excel. Through our many programs, services and opportunities, Chickasaw youth will learn valuable lessons and create meaningful connections with their Chickasaw culture and community.
We are continually working toward a bright future with an appreciation for all the blessings we are afforded as Americans and Chickasaws.
